Hawaii is embracing a relatively new technology that is changing the way people get information. It’s called podcasting and it allows just about anyone to create his or her own Internet radio show… Unlike broadcasts, podcasts tend to have narrowly targeted audiences, which keeps listenership for each of them relatively low, says local Internet consultant Burt Lum. Podcasting’s advantage comes in numbers because anyone can create them.

Join telecommunications industry leaders and educators from Hawaii and abroad tomorrow at Telecom 2005, the annual conference of the Hawaii Telecommunications Association. One of the sessions is entitled, “Podcasting – The Rising Star of the Internet Landscape.” Moderator Burt Lum leads Peter Kay, Roxanne Darling and Ryan Ozawa in a discussion about podcasting and its potential. The event takes place at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.

Nowadays it is not unusual to take a class online, but imagine a “Podcast” class. It is only happening in a few places across the country with the University of Hawaii at Manoa being one of them. David Nickles’ Computer Science 101 class is Podcast so instead of books, his students bought Ipods. “What we are trying to, is put the technology in their hands and empower them,” said Nickles.

And just like that, it’s October, and we’ve entered the last quarter of a year that seems to have just flown by.

V. Brown of 808Talk.com introduced us to DoctorTrey.com, a podcast by “Dr. Trey” and “Jroq” that’s dedicated to the Hawai’i music industry, it’s players and it’s fans. They feature new music, interviews, news and reviews.

Gail at HawaiiDiner.com announces the results of “Burger Wars,” a four-month project to find the best burger in Honolulu. Listen to the podcast to see who made the cut… it’s probably not who you think!

Finally, Ryan of HawaiiUP has teamed up with his wife Jen to send out The Transmission, a spinoff podcast devoted entirely to ABC’s hit filmed-in-Hawaii television series, “Lost.”

Local tech entrepreneur and podcaster Peter Kay of “Your Computer Minute” is traveling on business in India, and has started a special travelogue podcast at Peter Kay’s India Travels” (here’s the feed). Follow him as he makes his way between airports, hotels, and meetings, talking about his day and talking to some of the locals.

There are two great events in Honolulu today for anyone interested in podcasting.

At noon, Roxanne Darling and Shane Robinson of Bare Feet Studios will explain podcasting by recording and publishing a show during their presentation. “Podcasting: Step By Step” will be held at the University of Phoenix campus in downtown Honolulu, located inside Topa Financial Center (formerly Amfac) at 745 Fort Street.

Then, after dark, tune into PEG on Oceanic cable channel 55 for a friendly chat about podcasting on High Tech Hawaii, a weekly public access television show dedicated to technology issues in the islands. “We invented podcasting,” said Todd Cochrane, who hosts his own podcast known as “Geek News Central” out of his home in Honolulu. “The people who are coming in now are jumping over the fence and joining the party. It’s funny how Apple is so focused on the commercial shows and how little they are emphasizing the grass-roots side of podcasting.”
